Crazed Drunk Attacks Two Children, Falls on his own knifeLast Saturday night after the school’s orignal pageant, Maycomb County: Ad Astra Per Aspera, two children were attacked on their way home by a crazed drunk. The children Jeremy and Jean Louise, known around town as Jem and Scout, left the school much later than everyone else because they were looking for Scout’s shoes. After giving up their search they decided to head home without them, by themselves through the dark streets of Maycomb. As they walked they heard a sound but dismissed it as nothing which they soon learned to be a mistake when they were assaulted by Bob Ewell who intended to kill them over a dispute he had with their father. However, Bob fell on his knife killing himself before he could do what he intended. He did manage to break Jem’s arm and knock him unconscious before he died, but Scout was unharmed due to her costume from the pageant, which served as armor. Bob Ewell had become a topic of gossip around town after Jem and Scout’s father Atticus Finch had made some unflattering conjecture about his home life and how he treats his children, during the trial of Tom Robinson and his assault of the children is likely to have been an attempt at revenge. There are some reports of another person who was involved and may have helped the children fend off the attacker but these are unconfirmed and Heck Tate himself dismisses them as foolish saying, “He fell on his knife and that’s it. There’s nothing else to it.”

Mad dog provides a good scare for maycomb, is put down by local lawyerIt has been a surprisingly cold winter here in Maycomb this year but that’s not as surprising as the sighting of a mad dog in town last week. The dog was first spotted by Jeremy “Jem” Finch who told his family’s cook and housekeeper Calpurnia. Recognizing what the dog was and the threat that it posed, Calpurnia called the Heck Tate, the town sheriff. Heck picked up Atticus, the head of the Finch household, and they arrived outside the Finch’s place as the dog crazily shambled nearer. Heck Tate nominated Atticus to be the one to shoot the dog, due to his great skill with a rifle. Atticus reluctantly accepted and shot and killed the mad dog. Heck Tate later sent for some people to carefully retrieve the body. The entire ordeal was a frightening event for the people of Maycomb but the crisis was averted due to the quick thinking and action of some of Maycomb’s own citizens.
